Wood Saddle Kit

Starting at: $79.00

This is the best saddle for the money you will find anywhere. Designed exactly like the finished saddle above, they feature oak cross bucks and split resistant, light weight poplar side boards. As stated above, the side boards are carefully handcrafted with a full bevel on the top and bottom as well as front and rear. Don't settle for "flat" sideboards on your naturally contoured goat. You reap the cost savings when you invest the labor necessary to sand and finish the wood. They arrive loosely assembled with all strapping, hardware and complete instructions. If you can use sandpaper and operate a screw driver, then you can handle this kit.

UPGRADE OPTION:
Select our Mountain Straps as an upgrade to this saddle. Our Mountain Straps are available for hard-core packers. This design provides more stability of the saddle in steep mountain terrain. Girth and rump straps come off of a 2" ring set lower on the saddle to help them stay in place. Rump strap is stabilized with an adjustable britchen system and includes 5/8" pad. Girth can be either the clamp buckle style or nylon webbing using a traditional horse "cinch" knot.

I give this 4 stars only because it's a bit perplexing. It's listed as a kit and it's implied that you'd buy it in this configuration so you could stain and assemble it yourself--but mine came fully assembled with the straps installed, exactly as pictured. I had to disassemble it before finishing to prevent getting stain on the straps. That said, it's a great product, and for those of you who are wondering, it weighs 4.1 lbs with the straps but without the blanket. The pocket blanket adds an additional 1.6 lbs for a total of 5.7 lbs.

This kit is well worth the money, I think for the value and a little time sanding and staining. You can't beat the price. I also like the option to upgrade the straps. North west pack goats supply is very easy to deal with and quick shipping.

I made three of these kits and they came out great! I took pictures of what they looked like out of the box, and I pencilled in front/back, right/left (goat's R/L) but it wasn't really necessary. I stained with leftover stain and sprayed with poly urethane (several coats). I sent back one of the kidney shaped boards for sanding critique; I appreciated the feedback that it was ok. These look very durable and used inside the pocket saddle pad, my goats don't seem to even notice they are wearing packs.
